General description

Archeo-naturalistic Trekking in TusciaDiscovering Norchia, the Etruscan “Little Petra”Tuscia is an ancient land, full of history and mystery, home to remote and captivating places. On this trekking experience, we will immerse ourselves in one of the most evocative sites of Etruria: Norchia, also known as “Little Petra,” an extraordinary necropolis carved into tuff rock and surrounded by dense woodland, overlooking the ancient Roman route of the Via Clodia. The ancient city of Orcla, inhabited since the Bronze Age, reached its peak during the Etruscan period. Here we can admire the imposing cube-shaped tombs, oriented toward the west, where the sun sets, many of which still preserve inscriptions with the names of the families who once owned them. The trail will lead us to the evocative Church of San Pietro, passing first through the ruins of the medieval castle of the Vico family. In this area, time seems to have stopped: the ancient “pestarole,” once used for wine production, are still visible today. One of the most thrilling moments will be crossing the Cava Buia, one of the longest rock-cut paths in existence, the very same route traveled by the Etruscans thousands of years ago. At the end of the cava, we will climb to the plateau above, which opens onto a spectacular view of the entire valley. This experience is recommended for those who love adventure, nature, and history intertwined in a single unforgettable journey.GuideEdoardo BruniEnvironmental Hiking Guide (GAE – Law 04/2013) – n. 128 AIPTOCHeritage Interpreter – n. 128 AIPTOCBushcraft & Survival Instructor ASI-CONI – n. 202312548Trail features* Difficulty: easy to moderate* Type: loop* Distance: 8–9 km* Elevation gain: approx. 80–90 m* Duration: 6–7 hours* Water crossings: yes, 1 easy crossing* Children: from 6 years old, accustomed to walkingTechnical informationThere is a small stream crossing, which can be easily managed:* with protective shoe covers* barefoot* or with waterproof hiking bootsRecommended clothing* Hiking boots (mandatory, already worn-in)* Season-appropriate clothing* Long trousers* Rain jacket (in case of uncertain weather)* Trekking poles (if available)What to bring* Packed lunch* At least 1.5 liters of water* Snacks
