General description
Discovering Norchia, the Etruscan “Little Petra,” and the wild Tuscia.Tuscia is an ancient land, rich in history and mystery, home to remote and fascinating places. On this trekking experience, we will immerse ourselves in one of the most evocative sites of Etruria: Norchia, also known as “Little Petra,” an extraordinary necropolis carved into tuff rock and surrounded by dense woodland, overlooking the ancient Roman route of the Via Clodia. The ancient city of Orcla, inhabited since the Bronze Age, reached its peak during the Etruscan period. Here we will admire the impressive cube-shaped tombs, oriented toward the west—where the sun sets—many of which still preserve the engraved names of the families to whom they belonged. Our hike will lead us to the evocative Church of San Pietro, first passing through the ruins of the medieval castle of the Vico family. In this area, time seems to stand still: the ancient “pestarole,” once used for wine production, are still visible today. One of the most thrilling moments will be crossing the Cava Buia, one of the longest rock-cut roads in existence, the very same path traveled by the Etruscans thousands of years ago. At the end of the cava, we will climb up to the plateau above, where a breathtaking view opens over the entire valley. In this private group experience, you will feel like a true Indiana Jones, exploring places filled with mystery, history, and adventure.Your guide will also take care of lunch with a tasting of local products!GuideEdoardo BruniEnvironmental Hiking Guide (GAE – Law 04/2013) – n. 128 AIPTOCHeritage Interpreter – n. 128 AIPTOCBushcraft & Survival Instructor ASI-CONI – n. 202312548Trail features* Difficulty: easy to moderate* Type: loop trail* Distance: 8–9 km* Elevation gain: approximately 80–90 m* Duration: 6–7 hours* Water crossings: yes, 1 easy crossing* Children: from 6 years old, accustomed to walkingTechnical informationThere is a small stream crossing, which can be easily managed:* with protective shoe covers* barefoot* or with waterproof hiking bootsRecommended clothing* Hiking boots (mandatory and already worn-in)* Season-appropriate clothing* Long trousers* Rain jacket (in case of uncertain weather)* Trekking poles (if available)What to bring* At least 1.5 liters of water* Snacks
